图表作文是近年来大学英语四、六级及研究生招生外语考试的惯用题型。91年6月份所考的图表作文中，全国高校学生的平均得分仅为5.07，其结果无疑难以令人满意。学生普遍感到图表作文难以应付，尤其是对表格中的一些英文数据不知如何用准确的词汇和固定的句型来予以表达。学生们会通过分析对比，寻求数据变化规律，但对其随时间变化或升或降，倍数或增或减却无法从容流利地用英文表述，这说明在平时数词的学习中，如何正确表述倍数的变化实乃成为学生们语法学习中一个被“淡忘的角落”，从而影响着学生在CET图表作文中的直接得分。笔者在此不妨将倍数增减的惯用表述作如下对比性的归纳和剖析。
一、倍数增加的表示法
1.英语中“2倍”的表示法
英语中的“2倍”常用twice,double表示，译为“翻一番”或“为……的2倍”。例如：
(1)He demanded double the usual fare.他要了比平时多一倍的路费。
(2)I have walked twice the distance.我已走了两倍的路程。
2.“times”表示倍数的用法
a:...times+as...as...相当于……的……倍。例如：
(3)There are now three times as many schools in our town as in 1949.我们城里的学校是1949年的3倍（或比1949年增加了2倍）。
b:...times＋形容词或副词比较级＋than...比……大／多……倍。例如：
(4)The number of factories in 1978 was 25times greater than in 1949.1978年的工厂数比1949年多25倍（或是1949年的26倍）。
c:...times+the size(width,length,breadth,level,value)of相当于……倍。例如：
(5)The earth is 49 times the size of the moon.地球是月球大小的49倍。（大48倍）
d:...times+up on(over)…超过……倍。例如：
(6)The industrial output in our factory this year is ten times over that of 1976.我们厂今年的工业产量比1976年增加了10倍。
e:...times+what从句为……的……倍。例如：
(7)The population in this city is more than 10 times what it was in 1970.这座城市的人口数量是1970年的10多倍。
f:...times+by(in)comparison with或(as)compared with...增加到……倍。例如：
(8)The cotton yield of this year has increased four times(as)compared with that of last year.今年的棉花产量增加到去年的4倍。
3.利用几个常见的动词或动词短语句型
a:increase (speed up,step up,raise,rise,go up,grow)+by+数字百分比或倍数增加了……例如：
(9)The output of steel went up by three times over the previous year.钢产量比上一年增加了3倍。
b:increase(be,rise,grow,go up)+X times增加了X-1倍（或增加到X倍）。例如：
(10)The output of machine tools has in creased three times.机床产量增加了2倍（增加到3倍）。
c:multiply X times或be multiplied by X times增加了X-1倍。例如：
(11)The sales of air-conditioners have been multiplied by four times since 1991.自1991年以来，空调的销售量增加了3倍。
二、倍数减少的表示法
1.“减少了几分之几”译为英语时，用分母÷（分母－分子）的得数作倍数，如下列表示：
减少了1/3:reduce 1.5 times
减少了1/5:reduce 1.25 times
减少了3/5:reduce 2.5 times
减少了5/7:reduce 3.5 times
例如：
(12)The cost of production of grinding machines has been reduced 4 times over against 1975.生产磨床的成本同1975年相比降低了四分之三。
(13)By using this new process the loss of metal was reduced 3.5 times.采用这种新工艺，金属损耗减少了5/7。
2.直接用“减少意义的谓语+by+分数（或百分数）”表示。例如：
(14)Switching times of the new type transistor is shortened by four-sevenths.新型晶体管的开关时间缩短了七分之四。
(15)The cost of TV has been reduced by 10%.电视机的成本降低了10%。
3.用“数字+less than”的句型表示。例如：
(16)The output of cars in the U.S.last year was 24 per cent less than in 1973.去年美国小汽车的产量比1973年下降了24%。
(17)The cost of TV sets is twice less than in 1980.电视机的成本为1980年的1/3（比1980年减少了2/3）。
