规范、漂亮的英语语音是每位英语学生都渴望得到的，但由于我国学生在英语语调方面大多缺乏正规、系统的训练，他们在朗读或说话时，每每出现这样或那样的错误。音素方面的错误，大多数同学通过一段时间的正音后，基本都能纠正过来，但是语调方面则会出现较多问题，且不易察觉并很难改正。根据笔者在教学过程中所作的观察和归纳，其中比较典型的、常见的错误，大体上可分为以下几方面：
Ⅰ.声调群音高（pitch）方面的错误
1.英语的声调群，其音高的基本模式是由高到低递降，直到最后一个重读音节上一降到底或转而上升。而我们有许多同学却把句中各个重读音节都用基本相等的音高念出来，例如：
（“o”代表一个重读音节，“·”代表一个非重读音节）
a.They're getting the work ready for tomorrow.
2.在不含强烈感情色彩的话语中， 各音节均使用平调（LevelTone），直至句尾最后一个重读音节用降调结束。然而我国学生，尤其是男生，往往把每个音节都连续用降调（Falling Tone）读出来，例如：
又如：
错：｀London is the｀capital of｀Britain.
对：′London is the ′capital of ｀Britain.
3.在一句话当中，调冠应念得低而弱，但许多同学却把调冠定得偏高，读得也偏重，例如：
错：′Will ′you ′have ′time to ′type ′this for ′me?
对：Will you ′have ′time to ′type ′this for me?
又如：
错：′You ′must ′light a ′fire to ′warm the ′dining-room.
对：You must ′light a ′fire to ′warm the ｀dining- room.
4.使用降调时，最后一个重读音节应一降到底，并且之后的非重读音节应念得轻而快，不能把降调用在最后一个非重读音节上，例如：
a.He wrote a letter to his brother.
又如：
错：I must ′make a note of ｀it.
对：I must ′make a ｀note of it.
5.使用升调时，也应在最后一个重读音节上使声调上升，若后面还有非重读音节，声调应继续上升，但不要把非重读音节念过头，以免超过重读音节的响度。然而，我国不少学生总是直到最后一个音节—不管它是重读音节还是非重读音节—才开始让声调上升，以致往往错误地把非重读音节当作主重音来读，例如：
Are you a language scholar?
Ⅱ.调核音节位置的错误
每一个声调群都有调核，它总是落在最突出的音节上，这个音节就叫做“调核音节”（也叫“主重音”或“声调重音”）。调核音节比同一声调群里的其他重读音节更为响亮，它是整个声调群的核心所在。然而，有许多同学却习惯于把调核放在声调群的最后一个重读音节上，而不管这个词是否话语中心，例如：
错：′Better to ′do ′well than to ′say ｀well.
对：′Better to ′do ｀well than to ｀say well.
错：′Is he ′coming? I′don't ′think ｀so.
对：′Is he ′coming? I ′don't ｀think so.
错：I ′like ′eating ′apples,′strawberries,and ′so ｀on.
对：I ′like ′eating [′]apples,[′]strawberries,and ｀soon.
错：The ′room ′isn't ′large e ｀nough.
对：The ′room ′isn't ｀large enough.
错：What a de′licious ｀apple.I ′like ′such ｀apples.
对：What a de′licious ′apple.I｀like such apples.
为避免以上提到的音高及调核位置方面的错误，应注意以下几点：
首先，应该按照声调群音高变化的基本模式，由高到低依次递降。尽量用平调来读调核以外的重调音节，不妨按照汉语拼音中的阴平调来练习。
其次，注意句子中调核音节的位置：读降调时，要在调核音节上一降到底，后面若有非重读音节，应保持在最低音调上，读得轻而快；读升调时，音调应从调核音节上开始往上升，后面若有非重读音节，音调则须继续上升。
再次，要在非重读音节上多下工夫，尤其是调冠及调尾非重读音节的读法，防止把这种音节读得过重过响。
最后，应注意，在日常的听读训练中，借助于合适的语音资料，尽量模仿。
只要在平时说话及语音模仿时注意以上几点，理论与实践相结合，同时多留意英语国家人士的标准发音和语调，就不难掌握比较自然流畅的英语语调。
