在英语中，说话者或写作者为了加强语意，增强表达效果，达到某种交际意图，常常会使用一些特有的词汇手段。数词通过使用修饰语来达到期望的效果便是一例。数词修饰语概括起来，大致可分为以下四种情况：
1.形容数目大或多
可在数词前加上fully,full,over,good,up to.at least,as many as,as high as.no less than,as long as等，或在数词后加上long和odd等强化修饰语。如：
(1)They will stay fully ten weeks.
(2)It is now full(no less than) thirty years since we parted.
(3)Our school is a good three kilometers from the station.
(4)They will make a charge of up to(as much as)one million yen.
(5)As many as fifty candidates applied for the post.
(6)No fewer than twenty students were absent through illness.
(7)Today's room temperature is as high as 38℃.
(8)Summer on Hainan Island lasts as long as eight and a half months.
(9)A rattlesnake shed its skin as often as four times a year.
(10)I paid more than ten pounds for it.
(11)Over two hundred deaths were reported.
(12)It will cost us at least one hundred dollars.（注：at least修饰数词，往往隐含着比“最低极限”多一点的可能性。）
(13)The box weighs upward(s) of ten kilograms.
(14)The scientists lived abroad for ten long years.
(15)I know that Oliver died and that his spirit has been lovingly near me these twenty odd years.
2.形容数目小或少
可在数词前加上less than,under,only,barely,scarcely,at(the)most,no more than等弱化修饰语。如：
(1)He found himself checkmated in under twenty moves.
(2)Mr.Wang paid less than ten pounds for a second-hand bike.
(3)He finished his writing in only five minutes.
(4)But I could picture her as she was in the story she told me-barely 20,pretty,with bright blue eyes.
(5)Tom was scarcely fifteen when he became a college student.
(6)His whole school education added up to no more than one year.
(7)There were at most twenty people at the meeting.
3.表示“恰好”、“整整”、“不多不少”
可用exactly,cool,flat,sharp,just,precisely,to the minute等修饰语，如：
(1)This cinema holds exactly 1,000 people.
(2)The lecture will begin at 8 o'clock sharp (to the minute).
(3)His new radio cost him a cool hundred yuan.
(4) You have precisely one hour to do the work.
(5)It is jast one pound.
(6)She receives $50 a week clear.
(7)We have spent three clear days playing in the country.
(8)He has been a sailor for a flat fifty years.
(9)I have neither more nor less 100 pounds.
(10)It is 50 years to the day since my father set up as a grocer.
(11)He'll be out for eight hours solid.
4.表示“大约”，“差不多”
常用的修饰语有about,around,almost,or so,some,approximately,in the rough等。如：
(1)There are some 40 or 50 people there.
(2)The Great Pyramid is nearly 5,000 years old.
(3)I have not seen him for almost two weeks.
(4)The speed of light is about 300,000 kilometers a second.
(5)There are around eighty pyramids in Egypt.
(6)We counted approximately the first thousand votes.
(7)The number of the out-of-work ironworkers increased by roughly 20 percent.
(8)Doctor Smith will be back in four days or so.
(9)The factory has turned out close to 5,000 cars.
(10)The house is worth one hundred thousand yuan in the rough.
(11)The railway is in the neighborhood of 200 miles long.
(12)It is a mile,more or less,from his home to the school.
(13)He is to sell the house for something like ￡150,000.
(14)It was close on/upon midnight when we arrived home.
