Australia's First Embassy in China Australia's First Diplomatic Mission in China
With ground floor and first floor, the building is in Chinese and Western brick and wood structure, whose plane adopts a “concave” shape. Its interior focuses on the central axis symmetry, and all functions are symmetrically arranged on both sides of the axis. It is currently used by the E'ling Park Management Office.
From 1941 to 1946, the Australian Embassy in China was Australia's first diplomatic institution in China, which had operated for six years. The building is still preserved very well, with shadedenduring foliage, lush courtyard, green moss and grass.

In July 1941, China and Australia established diplomatic relations at the ministerial level. The two sides decided to set up their respective diplomatic representatives and embassies in their counterparts' capital. On October 28th, Sir Frederick Egston, the first special plenipotentiary of Australia, presented the credentials to Lin Sen, the then President of the National Government of the Republic of China, which marked that the Australian Embassy in Chongqing, China was formally established.

After the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Australia in 1941, the first mission of the Australian ambassador Mr. Egston to China's wartime capital Chongqing was to establish the Australian Embassy. In July 1941, prior his assuming the office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the National Government had set the site of the embassy at the No.23, Fuxing Village, Huangjueya on the south bank of the Yangtze River. At that time, most of the foreign diplomatic missions and foreign communities including the US Embassy were mainly concentrated on that area.
Being relatively safe here, it is far from the administrative area where the various departments of the national government of the city and the main commercial areas are located. After a few months' stay in Huangjueping, Mr Igston realized that this location was indeed inconvenient. He wanted to look for a suitable property in the city. Later, he finally found the No. 71 Lijia Garden, Yi'ai Complex, which is the villa in the E'ling Park in Yuzhong District.
