One afternoon a coyote surprised a roadrunner when it was half asleep and leaning against a wall.
"Ah!Ah"the coyote shouted."I've got you!There is no escape!"
"Don't touch me!If I move,this wall will fall down on both of us!"cried the bird."T'll tell you what we should do.You hold up the wall for a while.I'll go and find some food for both of us."
The coyote agreed and leaned closely against the wall,while the roadrunner the bird he had intended to have for dinner—ran away.
A few weeks later,the bird was taking her nap under a shady tree.She had hung a bag on a branch.On the bag was a string that went all the way to the ground.
Suddenly,the coyote jumped out."Ah!I've got you again.I remember very well that you told me a big lie the last time we met."
"Now,wait a minute,"answered the roadrunner."I've got a bag full of chickens up there.You can always get me,but how often can you feast on fat chickens?"
"Well then,I'll have the chickens."
"Do you want them one by one or all at once?"
"All at once,of course!"said the greedy coyote.
The roadrunner pulled the string,and a whole bag of rocks fell upon the coyote.
Many months passed before they met again.This time,it was in the middle of the night.The roadrunner was drinking by the side of a lake.
The moon was so bright that the coyote was able to spot the bird from the top of a nearby hill.He ran down and easily cornered the bird.
"Before you open your mouth again to tell me another lie,"the coyote warned,"Let me tell you that I won't believe a word you say."
The moon,round and yellow,was shining upon the water of the lake.The roadrunner said,"You can see for yourself that I am not telling a lie this time.Look at that big yellow cheese floating on the water,just a few yards away from us.It would be so easy for you to go and get it.You're hungry,I know.But think how much better a nice juicy piece of cheese would taste than I would.I would.I'm all skin and bones!"
The coyote had to agree.He could taste the cheese already.
"All right,"said the bird."Tie the rope I've got here to your neck,and if the cheese is too hard to pull,then I'll be able to help you."
With the rope around his neck,the coyote started to swim toward the moon.At the end of the rope,there was a big stone.The coyote,the rope and the stone slowly began sinking in the mud at the bottom of the lake.
一天下午，一只草原狼意外地撞见了一只靠墙站着，几乎睡着了的长尾鸟。
“哈！哈！”草原狼叫道，“我逮着你了，你是逃不掉的！”
“别碰我！如果我动一下，这面墙就会垮倒，砸在我们两人身上。”这只鸟大叫道。“我来告诉你我们该怎么去做。你替我把这堵墙顶住一会儿。我去为我们俩找些吃的来。”
草原狼同意了，他紧紧地靠在这堵墙上，而长尾鸟——他打算当做午餐吃的那只鸟——一溜烟地跑掉了。
几个星期之后，长尾鸟正在一棵阴凉的树下打盹。她在树枝上挂着一个袋子。袋子上拴了根细绳，一直拖到地上。
突然，草原狼跳了出来。“啊！我又抓住你了。我可是记得清清楚楚，我们上次见面的时候，你对我撒了一个天大的谎。”
“现在，请等一下，”长尾鸟答道。“我有一个袋子挂在树上，里面装满了鸡。你随时都可以抓住我，但你吃到肥美的小鸡的机会多吗？”
“那好吧，我要吃小鸡。”
“你是想一只一只地吃，还是一次全吃掉？”
“一次全吃掉，当然！”贪婪的草原狼说道。
长尾鸟拉了一下绳子，一袋子的石块掉下来砸在草原狼的身上。
几个月过去了，他们又见面了。这次是在午夜。长尾鸟正在湖边喝水。
月光非常明亮，草原狼从附近的山顶上能发现长尾鸟。他从山上跑了下来，很容易就截住了长尾鸟。
“在你再次张口来给我撒谎之前，”草原狼警告道，“我要告诉你我将不相信你说的任何一句话。
圆圆的、蛋黄色的月亮照耀住湖面上。长尾鸟说道，“你自己可以看看我这次是不是在说谎。看看漂浮在水面上的蛋黄色的乳酪，它离我们只有几码远。对你来说，你会很容易去拿到它的。你饿了，我知道。你想想，一块美味多汁的乳酪吃起来可比吃我味道好多了。我瘦得皮包骨头！”
草原狼认同了。他可以吃上乳酪了。
“好了，”长尾鸟说道。“把我这里的一根绳子栓在你的脖子上吧，如果乳酪太重了不好拉，我还可以帮帮你。”
草原狼把绳子栓在脖子上，开始游向月亮。在绳子的另一头，栓着一块大石头。草原狼、绳子、石头缓缓地沉入了湖底的淤泥之中。
