在英语的听、说、读、写、译中经常要表示“除了……（之外）”这样的概念，而表达这一概念的英语介词表达法非常丰富。以外语教学与研究出版社出版的大学英语教材《新编大学英语》1-4册为例，其中出现的表示“除了……（之外）”的英语介词表达法至少有十种，如except,except for,apart from,aside from,beyond,other than,on top of,but,in addition to,besides等。这些介词或介词短语都表示“除了……（之外）”的意义。但你知道这些介词的具体意义和用法以及它们当中相似表达法之间的细微差别吗？这里面除了“except”，和“besides”非常常见之外，其他的是否你也很熟悉或经常使用呢？下面我们就来谈一谈不常见的或比较难理解的那些表示“除了”的介词的具体意义和用法以及它们之间的细微差别。
1.except和except for二者都表示：除了（表示所说的不包括在内），但except通常用在概括性的词语后面，尤其是用在all,every,no,everything,anybody,nowhere,whole等词语后面。例如：
He ate everything on his plate except the beans.除了豆以外，他把盘子里的东西都吃了。
I've cleaned all the rooms except the bathroom.除了洗澡间以外，所有房间我都打扫了。
Nobody came except John and Mary.除了约翰和玛丽，谁也没来。（用在nobody后面）
在其他情况下，我们通常用except for，而不用except。例如：
I've cleaned the house except for the bathroom.除了洗澡间，我把整座房子打扫了一遍。
Except for John and Mary nobody came.除了约翰和玛丽，谁都没来。（用在nobody前面）
The house was quiet except for the noise of Louise typing.这间屋子静得只能听见路易丝打字的声音。
此外，在介词和连词前用except，而不用excopt for。例如：
It's the same everywhere except in Scotland.除了苏格兰不一样，其他各地都一样。
He's good-looking except when he smiles.他长得很好看，可是一笑就不行了。
Tony and his brother have little in common except that they share the same interest in cricket.托尼和他的哥哥除了都对板球感兴趣之外，在其他方面几乎没有什么共同之处。
except后还可接动词，但动词形式取决于前面出现的词语，如果其前出现do的任何形式，通常用动词原形。例如：
He does nothing except eat all day.(does—eat)他整天除了吃什么都不干。
She's not interested in anything except skiing.(interested in—skiing)她除了对滑雪感兴趣外，对别的什么都不感兴趣。
There isn't anything to do except wait to see what happens.(to do—wait)除了等着看发生什么事情之外，没有任何事情可做。
2.apart from和aside from二者都表示：除了（除去）……以外；除了……以外……也。
apart from有两种意义，即except（除了、除去……以外）和besides（除了……以外……也）。请看具体用法：
1)except(for)；without considering除了（某事物）以外……都、全、没、没有等；除去。例如：
Apart from his nose he's quite good-looking.他除了鼻子以外，哪都很好看。
I like all musical instruments apart from the violin.所有的乐器，除了小提琴，我都喜欢。
2)besides;in addition to sth.除了（某事物）以外……也、还、只等；不止。例如：
Apart from the injuries to his face and hands,he broke both legs.他除了脸部和双手受伤以外，两条腿也断了。
Apart from the violin,he plays the piano and the flute.除了拉小提琴，他还会弹钢琴和吹笛子。
aside from的意义和用法与apart from基本相同，只是aside from主要用在美国英语中。
3.beyond:except(for)；除……以外；除了（常用于否定句和疑问句中）。例如：
He's got nothing beyond his state pension.除了国家发的养老金，他一无所有。
I didn't noice anything beyond his rather strange accent.除了他那颇为古怪的口音以外，我没注意到别的。
I know nothing of it beyond what he told me.除了他告诉我的以外，别的我都不知道。
Beyond that,there is nothing more I can say.除了那件事我什么都不能说。
另外，beyond还有“在或向（某物）的远处；迟于或超过（某一时间）；超越（某事物）范围”等基本意义，这里不再一一举例说明。
4.other than：（esp.after a negative尤其用于否定词之后）except除了、除了……以外。例如：
He never speaks to me other than to ask for something.他除了向我要东西，从不跟我说话。
Ann has no close friends other than him.安除了他以外没有好朋友。
other than除表示“除了”的意思之外，还表示“different(ly)from；not不同于；而不”。例如：
I have never known him behave other than selfishly.我只知道他一向自私自利。
She seldom appears other than happy·她很少有不高兴的时候。
5.on top of sth./sb.:besides;in addition tosth.除了……以外……也、还。例如：
He gets commission on top of his salary.他除了薪水之外还得到佣金。
On top of borrowing ￡ 50,he asked me to lend him my car.他向我借了50英镑，另外还向我借汽车。
此外，on top of还有“over or above sth./sb.在某物（某人）的上方或上边”之意。例如：
Put this record on top of the others.把这张唱片放在其他唱片上面。
6.but:except除……之外。
在all,none,every,any,no（以及everything,everybody,nothing,anywhere等）之后，可以用but来表示except。例如：
He eats nothing but hamburgers.他除了汉堡之外，别的什么都没吃。
I've finished all the jobs but one.除了一项工作之外，别的工作我都做完了。
Everybody's here but George.除了乔治，大家都来了。
7.in addition to sb./sth.:besides；as an extra person,thing or circumstances加之；除……之外。例如：
In addition to the names on the list there are six other applicants.除了名单上的名字之外，还有六个申请人。
He lost his job and in addition to that his wife left him.他失去了工作，此外，他的妻子也离开了他。
综上所述，这些介词表达法虽都有“除了……（之外）”的意思，但一些介词像apart from/aside from同时包含besides和except两个意思，须根据语境才能判断其确切含义；而一些介词像in addition to,except for只含有besides或except一个含义；还有一些介词像on top of,other than,but除了有besides或except其中一个含义外，还另有其他意义。此外，beyond,other than通常用在否定句和疑问句等特殊句式当中或否定词的后面。这些细微的差别希望同学们在以后的英语学习中多加注意，避免在考试中出错。
