rather(adv.)是高中英语学习中经常遇见的一个词，很多同学对它的用法搞不清楚，现将其用法归纳总结如下：
rather最常见的用法有两大类，即：表程度和表选择。
一、表程度，意思是“相当地；多多少少；有一点”
1.跟形容词或副词连用
She's rather pretty.她相当漂亮。
Aren't we driving rather fast？我们的车是不是开得快了点？
2.跟形容词、副词的比较级连用
My brother is rather better today.我弟弟今天好多了。
This hat is rather more expensive than that.这顶帽子比那顶要贵得多。
3.不管名词前有没有形容词修饰，rather均可用在名词前，放在定冠词之后；名词前有形容词修饰时，rather放在不定冠词之前或之后都可以；没有形容词修饰时，rather一般放在不定冠词之前。
This is a rather surprising result.or:This is rather a surprising result.这是一个相当惊人的结果。
That's rather a nuisance.那简直讨厌极了。
The rather tall boy in the corner is my cousin.墙角那个相当高的男孩是我的堂兄。
注意下面的句子：
That's rather the impression I wanted to give.那正是我要给人们的印象。
在此句中，rather用在了定冠词之前，这是因为rather在此并不表示“相当地；多多少少；有一点”，而是表示“恰恰，正是”，相当于just。
4.跟too连用
This book is rather too difficult for the juniors and rather too easy for the seniors.这本书对低年级学生太难，对高年级学生又太容易。
5.跟动词连用
I rather think we're going to lose.我倒是认为我们要输。
I rather enjoy doing nothing.我挺喜欢什么事都不干。
Some people rather like being miserable.有些人相当愿意受苦。
二、表选择，rather不仅是一个表示程度的词，还能用来表示选择。其结构是：rather than,would rather
1.rather than这一表达方式经常用在“平行结构”里：即与两个形容词、两个状语词组、两个名词或代词、两个动词不定式，或两个－ing形式连用。
I'll call her hair chestnut rather than brown.
我宁愿说她的头发是栗色，而不是棕色。
I'd prefer to go in August rather than in July.我愿8月去，而不愿7月去。
I decided to write rather than telephone.我决定写信而不打电话。
2.would rather
(1)跟不带to的不定式，意为“would prefer to”。
Would you rather stay here or go home？你愿意呆在这儿，还是回家？
(2)跟从句，从句中用一般过去时表示现在或将来要做的事情。
I'd rather you went home now.我愿意让你现在就回家。
—Shall I open the window？我打开窗户可以吗？
—I'd rather you didn't.你最好别开。
除上述两种主要用法外，还有一个常见的用法，表示“确切地，精密地”。
He arrived very late last night or rather in the early hours this morning.他昨晚深夜到达，或者更精确地说，在今天凌晨到达。
