More and more cars are being driven in the United States. The increased traffic has created a new job:to give informationabout crowded roads.Radio and television stations in every bigcity broadcast this information. The following is one man's thoughtsabout these traffic reports.

One morning several years ago I was listening to the radiowhist I was driving to work.A traffic report interrupted the music. The broadcaster said someone had driven his car onto the grass between two roads. The driver stopped his car, then killed himself. The broadcaster was not sad.He was angry. It was the middle of the morning's busiest driving time."How could anyonedo such a thing?"he asked.People who broadcast traffic reportswere mostly in the early morning and the late afternoon. This iswhen people are driving to work and when they are driving home. These are called rush hours(高峰时间).Some traffic reportersfly airplanes to observe the cars below. Some fly helicopters(直升飞机).Others drive cars to get right in the middle of the traffic. They describe road construction(道路建设)as it is taking place. They tell about accidents or weather conditions that affect driving. Then they advise drivers which roads to take and which to avoid for the quickest way to get where they are going.Drivingin or near most American cities can be a frightening experience. As a boy,my family planned trips so we would never pass through a city during rush hour.Since then traffic has become much worse. The roads are better, there are more of them. And some have been built so cars and trucks can travel around cities, not throughthem.Yet no matter how many new roads are built, there never seem to be enough at rush hours. To help reduce the number of cars on the road, local governments have established rules for car pools(轮流开车上班组合).The rules say that some partsof the road can only be used when more than one person is in the vehicle. Many American cities also have train systems. This mayhelp lessen the problem.Yet it also makes it possible for people to live farther and farther from their work. Many drive their cars toand from the train stations. In New York city the head of the Transportation Department was asked about the best way to get from one side of the city to the other during rush hour.He thought a moment, then he answered,"The best way is to be bornthere."
