It was late on a bitterly cold, snowy New Year's Eve.Apoor little girl was wandering in the dark, cold streets.Shewas bareheaded and barefooted. She certainly had had slipperson when she left home, but they were not much good, for theywere so huge and had last been worn by her mother. And theyfell off the poor little girl's feet when she was runningacross the street to avoid two carriages that were rollingrapidly by.One of the shoes could not be found at all.And theother was picked up by a boy who ran off with it,saying thatit would do for a cradle when he had children of his own.

So the poor little girl had to go on with her little barefeet which were red and blue with the cold. She carried aquantity of matches in her old apron, and held a packet ofthem in her hand.Nobody had bought any of her matches duringall the long day.Nobody had even given her a copper. The poorlittle creature was hungry and perishing(注:perish:vi.消失)with cold and she looked the picture of misery. She found acorner where one house projected(注:project:vi.伸出, 凸出)a little beyond the next one,and here, she crouched, drawing upher feet under her.But she was colder than ever.

Her little hands were almost dead with cold. One littlematch would do some good.Dare she pull one out of the bundleand strike it on the wall to warm her fin-gers?She pulled oneout.Rishhh...How it splattered, how it blazed(注:blaze:vi.燃烧).It burnt with a bright clear flame just like a candlewhen she held her hand on it.It was a very cu-rious candle, too. The little girl fancied that she was sitting in front of abig stove with polished brass feet and handles. There was asplendid fire blazing in it and warming her

so beautifully. But what hap-pened?Just as she was stretching out her feetto warm them, the blaze went out.

The stove vanished and she was left sitting with the endof a burnt-out match in her hand.Again she lit another.Thistime she was sitting under a lovely Christmas tree.It wasmuch bigger and more beauti-fully decorated than the one shehad seen when she peeped through the glass doors at the richmerchant's house this very last Christmas.Thousands

oflighted candles gleamed upon its branches

and

coloredpictures such as she had seen in the shop windows looked downto her.The little girl stretched out both her hands towardsthem, and out went the match.

All the Christmas candles rose higher and higher till shesaw that they were only the twinkling stars. One of them felland made a bright streak(注:streak:n.条纹; 闪光)of lightacross the sky."Someone is dying,"thought the little girl.Forher own grandmother, the only person who had ever been kind toher, used to say,"When a star falls,a soul is going up to God."

Now she struck another match against the wall and thistime it was her grand-mother who appeared in the circle offlame. She saw her quite clearly and dis- tinctly, looking sogentle and happy."Grandmother!"cried the little creature,"Oh,do take me with you.I know you will vanish when the matchgoes out.You will vanish like the warm stove, the deliciousgoose and the beautiful Christmas tree."

She hastily struck a whole bundle of matches because shedid so long to keep her grand-mother with her.The light ofthe matches made it as bright as day.Grandmother had neverbefore looked so big or so beautiful. She lifted the littlegirl up in her arms, and they soared(注:soar:vi.翱翔, 高飞)in a halo(注:halo:n.晕; 光辉)of light and joy, far, farabove the earth where there was no more cold,no hunger,no pain. For they were with God.

In the cold morning light, the poor little girl sat therein the corner between the houses, with rosy cheeks and a smileon her face.Dead.
