Introduction

A good mastery of English writing skills is deemed to be pivotal and helpful. However, students in the secondary level are still very weak in developing their writing skills. To address this problem, many scholars put their efforts on error analysis of students’ writing. Some previous studies have demonstrates that low abilities in grammar can inhibit students from writing effectively. To summarize, sentence errors are still a serious problem for students when they are asked to write. Hence, the purpose of this study is to find out the main types of errors in students’ sentence writing by specific data analysis. However, the data gathering process is slightly deficient, which affects the reliability of the article.

Summary

The study investigated the frequency and the types of sentence errors committed by the respondents from the College of Business. The author divided the article into five parts: introduction, background, methodology, results and discussion, and conclusion.

In introduction, the author emphasizes the importance of writing proficiency in second language acquisition and he gives a general description of error analysis in English writing, at the end of this part he shows us the overall structure of this thesis. In background, the author mainly demonstrates the previous studies by many other scholars in this field. After analyzing what has already been done, he points out that sentence errors are still a problem for students. In methodology, the author presents the research method employed in this study. Specifically, the participants were thirty students under the Accounting Technology program who were chosen randomly. The research method used was qualitative-quantitative and frequency count. The data was obtained from the sentences written by the respondents after listening and watching audio-visual prompt. Sample analysis is the last step in this part. In the section of result and discussion, the author shows us four tables to illustrates his findings. The study reveled the most common errors committed by students. In conclusion, the author stresses the purpose and significance of the study. Meanwhile, some recommendations are given to improve students’ knowledge of writing.

Evaluation

As an academic writing, this article shed light on explicit structure and data analysis for me. However, it would be perfect if some parts are improved.

Advantages

First, the structure of this article is very logical and clear. The article fell into five parts: introduction, background, methodology, result and discussion, and conclusion. In each part, the author makes a thesis statement, which gives readers a clear clue. Specifically, between every two parts, the author also uses some coherent sentences to make the article more integrative.

Second, the data analyzing process is detailed and convincible. The author analyzes the samples written by the thirty respondents one by one. At the first step, he finds out errors committed by the thirty respondents, then he classifies the errors into several types. Meanwhile, he shows us tables about frequency and rank distribution of errors in mechanical, grammatical and structural respectively. Both qualitative consideration and quantitative analysis are made in the paper.

Third, the author’s subjects choosing process is reasonable. He takes gender factor into consideration. Hence, there is an equal number of male and female students. Under this principle, the author choose these respondents randomly. In this way, the result of the study will not be influenced by gender factor.

Disadvantages

First the data gathering process seems not reliable enough. The data was obtained from the sentences written by the respondents after listening and watching “Rabbit and Turtle Story”. That is to say, what the respondents wrote are influenced by what they have watched and heard. Their listening proficiency, to some extent, affects their writing process.

Second, I don’t agree with the author’s statement that “writing good sentences is equal to writing good paragraphs”. In order to write a good paragraph, there are four essential elements unity, order, coherence and completeness.

Conclusion

This critical review has evaluated the article mainly from its structure and methodology. As an academic research, Marites Quibol Catabay sets a good example for us to analyze errors in students writing. With the clear structure, logical data analysis, and sufficient references, author shows us that the most common errors committed by students. Though, there are some deficiency in data gathering process, the writing skills and research method are worth learning. For me, who are interested in language teaching, this research would be a successful model to analysis errors in students’ writing.
