It is a great honor for me to be here today to announceCompaq's commitment to the China Youth Information OnlineProject.
I have participated in several events during my four dayshere in Beijing but this one is particularly special to mebecause it involves the young people who represent our future.
Based on what I have seen during my brief stay here, thatfuture is very bright.
I could see it in the faces of the several hundredstudents I had the honor of addressing at Beijing University.
I see it in the Chinese government's commitment to buildan information technology infrastructure that will enableChina to compete on an equal footing with other majoreconomies of the world.
And I see it in the promise of programs like this one.
From Western Europe to the Far East, Compaq is workingwith governments and educators to help improve access
toinformation technology and to incorporate the Internet intothe educational process.
We often talk about how the Internet is revolutionizingthe world of commerce, but the Internet has just as muchpotential to revolutionize education.
First,it is a tool for communications.
With the Internet, students can interact with otheronline students and schools in China and around the world .More and more schools are setting up their own Web pages toshare information, exchange ideas and learn more about othercultures.
In fact,at least one school in Beijing- the Number OneMiddle School of Beijing - is already on line as part of theSchool World Internet Education program based in Australia .And I'm sure there are others.
Second, the Internet is in many ways the world's largestresearch library. With the right direction from
theirteachers, students can find information that contributes totheir studies in a wide variety of fields.
They can visit an online museum, read the latest researchpapers from leading scientific institutions, and learn evenmore about current events.
Third, the Internet makes possible now approaches in long - distance learning. This will be particularly valuable
ina country as large as China.
As you build your Internet infrastructure and begin toprovide Internet access to schools, you will be able toprovide enhanced educational resources to schools in ruraland remote areas of the country.
The China Youth Information Online Project is consistentwith Compaq's vision of a world
where
virtually
allinformation is on line and people can securely access theinformation they need from anywhere at any time.
We are pleased to be working in partnership with theChina Youth Association and the China Commodities ExchangeCommission to bring education to the classroom via theInternet.
Compaq is donating 370 personal computers and 13 serversto Youth Palaces and schools in 12 cities. This equipmentwill enable each Youth Palace and school to set up anInternet classroom.I had the honor of attending the openingceremony of the Beijing Youth Palace earlier this week andwas proud to see that Compaq was making such a largecontribution to China's youth.
Through these efforts, youngsters will not only improvetheir education by using the Internet, they will also learnskills that are critically needed to help China achieve itsinformation technology and E-commerce goals.
It is also important for young people to understand theInternet because it is driving significant changes in ourworld:changes in how we communicate, how we buy and sell ,how we compete and how we live and work.
Today's students are tomorrow' s information technologyleaders.
By building an Internet infrastructure, you will givethese students the tools they need to help establish China asone of the leaders in the Internet Age.
The China Youth Information Online Project is a goodstart, and Compaq is honored to be part of this effort.
We are committed to working with you and with otherorganizations and institutions in China to help make theInternet an integral part of your educational system and youreconomy.
Thank you.
