New evidence indicates that a daily touch of the grape can have astounding health benefits.Salud(注:salud祝您健康;干杯)!
"DRINK A GLASS of wine after your soup,"an old Russian proverb says,"and you steal a ruble(注:ruble卢布(苏联货币)) from the doctor." It's a sentiment(注:sentiment意见;感情;感想) that nutrition re searchers now toast with a raised glass.
You've probably heard that drinking a glass or two of wine a day can lower your risk of dying from heart disease-by 30 to 40 percent, according to Harvard University scientist Walter Willett, author of Eat,Drink and Be Healthy and one of the country's leading nutrition experts. But wine's benefits go further:Howard University Hospital researchers reported last year that moderate wine drinkers are less likely to develop macular(注:macula=yellow spot(视网膜的)黄斑;macular有黄斑的)degeneration,an age-related eye condition that can lead to partial blindness.Other recent studies suggest postmenopausal women who consume moderate amounts of alcohol every day-the equivalent of one to two glasses of wine-have stronger bones than non-drinkers.Wine may also lower the risk of diabetes and gallstones.
How does wine bestow(注:bestow赠与;给予) its remarkable bene fits? In the case of heart disease, research shows that alcohol opens up arteries and increases blood flow. That's important, since a heart attack usually occurs when a blood clot(注:blood clot血块) robs heart muscles of oxygen.Moderate drinking also increases levels of HDL(注:HDL high density lipoprotein高密度脂蛋白) cholesterol-so-called good cholesterol- which helps the body get rid of LDL(注:LDL low density lipoprotein低密度脂蛋白)cholesterol, the artery-clogging form. The antioxidants(注:antioxidant抗氧(化)剂;防老(化)剂) abundant in some forms of alcohol, especially red wine, can prevent LDL cholesterol from oxidizing; this damages artery walls, setting the stage(注:set the stage for为……
Despite these glad tidings, many public health experts are reluctant to recommend a glass or two of wine. The reason? "For one thing, too much of a good thing can be dangerous," says Willett.Forty percent of all traffic accidents are alcohol-related.Alcoholism(注:alcoholism酗酒;酒精中毒) can also be deadly.
"If you don't drink, don't feel compelled(注:compel强迫;使不得不)to start," says Willett."There are plenty of ways to get many of the same benefits." Exercise and a better diet top the list.
If you already drink, remember another piece of age-old wisdom:moderation in all things.Beyond two or three drinks a day,the risks begin outweighing the benefits.
