VI. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Warming up (3 minutes)
Show students a video of a group of androids playing football. Ask students to imagine that if computers could be put into androids, what will happen?
Purpose: To provide students a relaxed studying environment and cultivate students’ interest in learning the passage. After this, the students will be eager to know something about the androids and this is the very time to naturally lead the class into the next Step.
Step 2 Skimming and Scanning (10 minutes)
Firstly students deal with the difficult words in the text by referring to the dictionary, then let students listen to the recordings and finish tasks. In this step, I use Task-based Language Teaching method, which can give students a clear and specific purpose while reading. Then answer the following questions.
1.What does he act as on the team?
2.What helped him to move and think?
Purpose: To inspire the students to read actively instead of passively. In addition, the task is to develop the students’ reading skill by making prediction and to encourage the students to express their thoughts in English.
Step 3 Discussion and Presentation (20 minutes)
Lead the students to get into groups and make a discussion. The question is: If you have an android, what would you like it to be? Do you want it to look like a man or a woman, or neither? What would you like it to do? Let students discuss with their group members and draw their androids on the blackboard. Each group has a spokesman to describe its appearance and ability.
Purpose: To improve students’ speaking ability through discussion and their creativity and perform ability through presentation.
Step 4 Writing (4 minutes)
On the basis of discussion and presentation, show the structure of writing on the slide.
Para.1 Brief introduction (name, looks, etc)
Para.2 Ability or function (what you wish it to do)
Para.3 Ending (your opinion)
Purpose: To improve students’ writing ability by neat handwriting, proper structure, senior words and sentence patterns, and connecting words.
Step 5 Summary and Evaluation (2 minutes)
Ask students to summarize what they have learned in this lesson and check if they have achieved the teaching aims. The evaluation can be various, such as understand what the teacher says, take actively part in group discussion, learn the new words, etc.
Purpose: To let students understand the harvest in this lesson and have a right evaluation of themselves.
VII. Teaching reflection
Students are interested in discussing the androids. They are dying to master the advanced technology. Most students take an active part in talking about the appearance and functions of their androids. However, some students are shy and they are not active in discussing. What’s more, students lack of confidence in presenting their androids in front of the whole class.
As a teacher, I should design the teaching material more attractive and closer to students’ life so that they show interest in the lessons and discussion. In addition, I will give them more reference material when discussing. And most importantly, more encouragement is necessary and students are encouraged to speak as much as possible.
