Description of Professor Robbins

1.Professor Robbins has a little derby on his head.

2.He is carrying an umbrella with him,but it does not look like he's used it recently since it is neatly wrapped even though he just entered the building.

3.His head is very large, probably because his head is full of brains.

4.His nose is very big,as if he likes to stick his nose into other people's business.

5.He is somewhat portly.

6.He looks perplexed at the unhelpfulness of the clerk.

7.He's wearing a tweed jacket that looks very scholarly.

8.It looks like Professor Robbins has already replaced his lost umbrella with the one he is carrying, but he would still like the old one back.

第一句Professor Robbins has a little derby on his head.

The artist has made him into a caricature of himself with his head so big and his little derby barely covering the top of his head.

Professor Robbins" hat is way too small for his big head.

His big head is much too large for the small hat that he is wearing.

His head is far too big for the hat that barely covers his crown.

His head is to big and his feet are so small that I'm afraid the weight of his head will cause him to fall over.

His head is very large, probably because his head is full of brains.

People with big heads are not necessarily smart;sometimes they are stupid.

Likewise, people with small heads don't have to be stupid;many times they are quite smart.

His nose is very big,as if he likes to stick his nose into other people's business.

不过,词组keep one's big nose out of...

Why can't you keep your nose out of my business?

Why can't you keep your nose out of my business?

Every time I get a phone call at home,my parents would ask me who it is,and what he is calling me about.I wish they would keep their big noses out of my business.

Every time I bring a new friend home,my parenst would ask my friend many questions, like who he is,where he is from, how he knows me,etc.I wish they would keep their noses out of my business.

Description of Tim

1.Tim is sitting behind the desk.

2.He is wearing a pair of small wire-rim glasses.

3.His glasses are very thick.

4.His chin is propped in his hands, and he is staring off in the distance.

5.His hands,as well as his body,are pudgy.

6.He is a plump person.

第一句Tim is sitting behind the desk.中的词组sit behind the desk在这一情景中等同于sit at the desk。

Tim is sitting behind the desk with a woeful expression on his face.(面露苦相)

sadly thinking about his terrible job.(苦苦地想着这份倒霉的差事)

bored to tears.(厌倦之极)

Sitting behind the desk is a man with a very unfriendly look on his face.It looks as though he is very bored with his job,and he doesn't even want to help poor Professor Robbins.

第四句His chin is propped in his hands, and he is staring off in the distance.

He puts his chin in his hands, looking at Professor Robbins with an expressionless gaze.

词组put one's chin in one's hands意为“用双手托住下巴”。

Perhaps he is thinking about getting a better job,a more interesting job than being a clerk in a lost property office.

Perhaps the clerk is thinking about what he will have for dinner tonight,or something else about his personal life.

The clerk is probably daydreaming, living out some fantasy in his head.

The clerk is just waiting until five o'clock rolls around, when he can leave the office, and go do what he would like to do.

The clerk is probably just trying to upset his boss by refusing to do his work.

He is a plump person.

She is small and on the plump side.

She is plump without being fat.

a portly lady:肥婆

Comment on Professor Robbins

1.Professor Robbins has had a very unfortunate day.

2.First he lost his umbrella, and now he has wasted his time by going to the lost property office for nothing.

3.He lost his umbrella,as he is very absent-minded.

4.And now,he is extremely unlucky to have such an unsympathetic person at the lost propervy desk.

5.The clerk in the lost property office is unwilling to assist him.

6.If he knew how unsuccessful his visit to the lost property office was going to be,he wouldn't have made the trip at all.

7.It seems Professor Robbins will simply have to go buy a new umorella.

8.The old one is gone for good.

第一句Professor Robbins has had a very unfortunate day. 句中的短语a very unfortunate day在意义上与a very bad day或a very unlucky day相近。

第三句He lost his umbrella,as he is very absent-minded.

It is said that London is famous for its fog and rainy weather. Some gentlemen there carry an umbrella with them almost every day. Therefore, people often lose their umbrellas.

The old one is gone for good.

For the new year I made a resolution—I would give up smoking for good.

Comment on Tim

1.Tim doesn't seem to be helpful.

2.It looks like he isn't interested in his job.

3.It looks as though he is very bored with his job.

4.Tim looks interested in what Professor Robbins has to say but not inclined to get up and help him.

5.He looks lackadaisical; he does not want to get out of his comfortable chair.

6.He is not a good employee.

7.He should feel ashamed of himself for not helping Professor Robbins to find his old umbrella.

8.He should be replaced by someone who will be more attentive to the needs of the customers.

Tim isn't interested in helping Professor Robbins.

He is much too bored to really care about doing his job properly.

He is a demoralized worker.

It would be better that he finds another job,and someone who wants to help people should take his position.

Tim isn't interested in helping Professor Robbins. He doesn' t seem to be interested in his job at all.He is too bored to really care about anything or to try to be a good employee. He really should go find another job,and someone else with more interest in helping people should take over his position. He is not the right person for this job.

实例:

Sample 1

I can see in this picture that a man with a big nose has just walked into the London Lost Property Office. He must be looking for something he lost. The man behind the counter is just sitting and has not changed his position at all, even though someone has entered his office. His eyes have shifted to look at the man who has lost something, but he does not seem to be doing anything to help. The man behind the desk does not seem like a good employee. He is not thinking about what it would be like to lose something and the frustration of encountering an unhelpful employee like himself.

Sample 2

Professor Robbins went to the Lost Property Office one day. When he arrived,he noticed that the man behind the desk didn' t look very helpful. The man had his chin propped in his hands and was staring off into the distance as though he were bored and simply waiting for the time to pass so that he could go home. This situation troubled Professor Robbins because he was afraid he would not find his lost umbrella without the man's help. There were too many lost articles behind the desk for Professor Robbins to pick out his umbrella by himself. It seems like the umbrella may be lost for good, since Professor Robbins isn't going to get the help he needs to find it.
