Carbon-Ion Therapy
China’s fi rst self-developed carbonion therapy system has been approved by the national drug regulator and has obtained market access.
This is the fi rst time that the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) has approved a domestically produced carbonion therapy system, according to the offi cial website of the national drug regulator.
Installed in Wuwei Cancer Hospital in northwest China’s Gansu Province, the system was co-developed by the Institute of Modern Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a subsidiary company.
The selected sites refl ect the development of Chinese society from different aspects, including agriculture, education and industry, said Song Xinchao, deputy head of the NCHA.

An action plan for air pollution control was released on October 16, setting specifi c targets to improve air quality in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and nearby areas during autumn and winter.
The number of days with severe pollution should fall by 6 percent from October 1 to March 31, according to the plan released by several government agencies including the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the National Development and Reform Commission.
The average density of PM2.5 should drop by 4 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the plan.

A press conference on the Spring Bud Project is held in Beijing on October 10. Launched by the China Children and Teenagers’ Fund in 1989, it has funded and helped over 3.69 million girls living in poverty f niish school. Resilient Growth
China maintained steady trade growth in the fi rst three quarters of the year though global uncertainties weighed on trade demands, customs data showed on October 14.
Foreign trade rose 2.8 percent year on year during the January-September period, with exports expanding 5.2 percent and imports dipping 0.1 percent, according to the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC).
Foreign trade kept growing and the trade structure kept improving despite slowing global economic and trade growth and a more complex external environment, GACC spokesperson Li Kuiwen said.
A total of 464,000 fi rms reported trade activities during this period, up 5.9 percent year on year. The number of private fi rms rose 8.7 percent to 374,000, with a 5.1-percent trade growth achieved.
Despite the drop in overall imports, consumer goods imports rose 15.3 percent year on year. Imports of fruits, cosmetics, aquatic products and electric automobiles increased 42.3 percent, 39.9 percent, 35.9 percent and 93.7 percent, respectively.
The spokesperson, Yang Guang, said the move was a gross interference in China’s internal affairs, a blatant backing of violent radicals, and a full revelation of the U.S. House of Representatives’ and other politicians’ attempt to contain the development of China by playing the Hong Kong card.

China’s energy sector is accelerating its transition to a clean low-carbon mode. Renewable and nuclear energy have accounted for more than half of China’s annual increase in installed capacity since 2013, a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) said.
The share of renewables in meeting global energy demand is expected to reach 12.4 percent in 2023, according to the IEA forecast.
Improving Leverage
Property developers across China will see lower leverage in the next 12 to 18 months as revenue growth outpaces debt growth, a Moody’s report showed.
The credit metrics of 53 developers rated by Moody’s will improve during the period on robust revenue growth, a result of strong contracted sales growth in the past two to three years, the report said.
The weighted average revenue to adjusted debt ratio of the companies will increase to 70-75 percent from 62 percent for the 12 months ended on June 30, it predicted.

COMPUTER SCIENTIST WINS TEACHING MASTER AWARD
Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, an internationally known computer scientist, recently won the Teaching Master award at Zhejiang University. The outstanding teaching award was given to fi ve people, while the Innovative and Entrepreneurial Talent award was given to 10 people. The awards were presented for the fi rst time.
Yao, born in Shanghai in 1946, received the Turing Award, the most prestigious award in computer science, in 2000. He resigned from Princeton University in 2004 and began working at Tsinghua University in Beijing as a full-time professor, where he continues to train international leading talent in computer science.
Yao has made many fundamental contributions to the theory of computation. The Institute for Theoretical Computer Science at Tsinghua University, which he established, has become a leading global computer research center.
In 2017, Yao gave up his foreign citizenship and became a full academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

PROMINENT MATHEMATICIAN PASSES AWAY
Ding Shisun, a renowned mathematician and one of the fi rst advocates of the algebraic number theory in China, passed away in Beijing at the age of 93 on October 12.
Ding was former chairman of the China Democratic League (CDL), one of the parties in China which consists mainly of intellectuals in the fi elds of culture, education and science and technology.
He was also the president of the prestigious Peking University from 1984 to 1989.
Ding, born in Zhenjiang, east China’s Jiangsu Province in September 1927, studied mathematics at Tsinghua University from 1948 to 1950, was a teaching assistant at the mathematics department of the university from 1950 to 1952 and worked at Peking University fi rst as a professor and then as the dean of the mathematics department from 1952 to 1984.
He was a vice chairperson of the ninth and 10th standing committees of the National People’s Congress, China’s top legislature, and chair of the seventh, eighth and ninth central committees of the CDL.
