Closer China-Africa Partnership
Coffee from Ethiopia, flowers from Kenya,beef from South Africa … All of these,among others, are African products popular among the Chinese people.In recent years, large quantities of African products have continuously entered the Chinese market. In addition, Chinese products are also winning confidence of more and more African consumers. Thanks to an increase in various trade promotion mechanisms and diverse channels, China-Africa trade has boomed in the past decade.
Besides investment and infrastructure construction, trade is another important sector boosting China-Africa economic cooperation,as both need each other’s market. Statistics from the Ministry of Commerce of China show that bilateral trade value totaled $204.2 billion in 2018, a year-on-year increase of 20 percent. China has been the largest trade partner of Africa for 10 years in a row.
Now, the channels for China-Africa trade are set to be further diversified. On June 27-29,the First China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo is to be held in Changsha, central China’s Hunan Province. This expo was first announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation held in September last year, when he also announced eight major initiatives to boost China-Africa cooperation, backed by $60 billion of financial support.
Differing from other trade promotion events,this expo has two distinctive features that are worth mentioning.

First, promotion of replicable models of China-Africa cooperation. A book containing 101 success stories of China-Africa economic cooperation and trade has been compiled and will be released at the expo. The 101 cases, written in English, French and Chinese, are replicable and sustainable cooperation models collected across China.
Second, creation of an online expo that never closes. An online expo and an online exhibition of African products have been put on the Internet, so that visitors can timely gain information about projects, policies and mechanism of China-Africa economic cooperation and trade. Even during the closing days of the biennial expo, enterprises and local governments from China and African countries can still look for cooperation opportunities on the online platforms. At the same time, a permanent exhibition and sales venue for African products has been founded in the Hunan Gaoqiao Grand Market so that more African products can find their way to China.
