On the eve of the fifth anniversary of her death, the Princess of Wales continues to court(注:court:在这里是动词,作“招来”解) controversy.

Five years after her death in a Paris car accident at the height of her beauty and infamy(注:at the height of her beauty and infamy:at the height of 在…… Diana continues to make headlines.Recently came the serialization(注:serialization:分期(或分集)出版)of the tawdry(注:tawdry:伤风败俗的,不讨好的) memoirs of Diana's former official bodyguard,Royal Protection Squad Inspectot Ken Wharfe. On a flimsypretext (注:flimsy pretext:站不住脚的托辞;flimsy原意是“脆弱的,易坏的”)—that she urged him to put the record straight(注:put the record straight;澄清是非,把事实弄得准确) if anything“happened”to her—Wharfe details her affairs (注:affair:风流韵事)and dalliances (注:dalliance:调情).Throughout the book she is portrayed wariously as promiscuous (注:promiscuous:男女乱交的,滥交的;),stupid, mad, bad, impetuous, erratic childish, spiteful selfish, petulant (注:impetuous:冲动的;erratic:古怪的;petulant:暴躁的)and—perhaps aboy, all—misunderstood and solated.

But does it Diana's place in the hearts countless admirers around the world?A recent BBC poll asked Brtons to nominate who they con dered “great”enough to warrant documentaries on their lives.Elizabeth, and Diana were nominated first and second. To the royals' continuing irritation,Diana eclipsed(注:eclipse:淹没……的重要性(或地位、声誉等)) the Queen and Prince in life and,it seems, remains omnipresent (注:omnipresent:无处不在的)even in death.

With such good will towards her,it seems surprising that no event has been organised to mark the anniversary of her death. No official wreath-laying,no minute's silence in the Commons (注:the Commons:这里指House of Commons,即英国的众议院),no church services.A few people will take their children to the Peter Pan playground—remodelled in Diana's memory after her death—in Kensington Gardens.Others will lay bouquets at the gates of the palace where she lived. But it does not compare to the global expression of grief that marked her death.

The Queen, who was at her least popular after Diana's funeral, has enjoyed a hugely enthusiastic three-month public celebration of hergolden jubilee (注:jubilee:50周年庆).Done in Diana's fashion, she had public meet and greets and opened Buckingham Palace for a rock concert.Meanwhile.there isevery sign Prince Charles will remarry. After the accident,Charles was public enemy number one and Camilla Parker Bowles was virtually banished.Any suggestions that the pair might marry were considered too shocking to contemplate.Five years on,the new Archbishop of Canterbury hasapparently given his blessing to the Prince to marry Parker Bowles, the woman whose enduring affections prompted Charles to commit adultery in the first place (注:in the first place:当初).This, those who knew her have argued, propelled Diana on a course of fast(注:fast:放荡的) living and of relationships that too often ended in acrimony (注:acrimony:讽刺,刻薄) and, ultimately, her disappointment.

There was, many said,a tragic inevitability about her end.

Charles Spencer has turned part of the Spencer family home of 500 years into a shrine to his sister. Each summer for the past three years he has opened Althorp to the public. Two thousand visitors come every day, each willing to pay $27 to stroll through the galleries commemorating Diana. The proceeds(注:proceeds:(从事某种活动或变卖财物等的)收入,收益) go to the numerous ALDS and anti-landmine charities to which the Princess dedicated the last years ofher life.

You can see the wedding dress she wore down the aisle as the blushing, virginal bride all those years ago. There are also the elegant plunging(注:plunge:(女衣领口)开得很低(而担胸露肩)) evening gowns, and the khaki slacks(注:khaki slacks:卡其裤),sleeveless denim(注:denim:粗斜棉布)shirt and suede(注:suede:小山羊皮) loafers she wore in Angola when she met landmine survivors just before her death.Books of condolence at her death from all over the world fill one wall and a huge potpourri(注:potpourri:百花香(指放在罐内的干燥花瓣和香料混合物,能散发香味)),made up of the countless bouquets left outside Kensington Palace, fills one room. There's even the reworked version of Candle in the Wind, which Elton John sang at the funeral,Diana's passports and home-movie footage(注:footage:(影片的)连续镜头) of her first steps and childhood beach holidays.

Many of the 2000 visitors allowed into Althorp each day are elderly;most are women.A hugely disproportionate number appear to be infirm or disabled in some way-the same people Diana reached out to in life.

Diana is buried in an unmarked grave on an island in a take behind Althorp. At a mock (注:mock:仿制的)Greek temple bearing Diana's silhouette(注:silhouette:侧影,剪影)on the edge of the lake, dozens of people lay flowers. Some pray.Diane,a tourist from Northern Ireland. In a typical comment, said:"She must be very happy here-poor.girl had a terrible life. But she's got peace here at last."

Or perhaps not.Recently,Charles Spencer had metal plates inserted just under the surface of the island because,in his words,he feared "some demented(注:demented:狂乱的,失去本性的) person" might dig his sister up.

Hunted in life.Hunted in death.
