-ing分词(包括传统语法所指的“现在分词”和“动名词”)是中学英语的语法重点和难点,也是高考的考点。-ing分词具有动词的特征,所以有自己的逻辑主语,即分词的执行者。如果-ing分词的执行者是句子的主语,分词就不带逻辑主语,如果-ing分词的执行者不是句子的主语,分词就必须带自己的逻辑主语。-ing分词在句子中可以作主语、宾语、状语等。ing分词在句子中的作用不同,其逻辑主语的表达方式也不同。
一、-ing作主语
-ing分词作主语时,其逻辑主语用物主代词或名词所有格表达。例如:
(1)Your being late means waiting for another hour.
(2)Mary's being late made the teacher angry.
(3)Their coming to help was a great encouragement to us.
二、-ing分词作宾语
-ing分词作宾语时,其逻辑主语如果是句子的主语,则省略;例如:
We enjoy working with you.
I insisted on starting at once.
He practises speaking English in and out of class.
如果-ing分词的逻辑主语不是句子的主语,其逻辑主语可用物主代词、人称代词宾格、名词所有格或名词普通格表达。例如:
(1)The teacher suggested our/us holding a meeting to discuss the matter.
(2)Do you mind Tom's joining us?
(3)I don't like young people smoking.
三、-ing分词作状语
V-ing分词作状语时,如果分词的逻辑主语是句子的主语,则省略。例如:
(1)Seeing the teacher come in,the students stood up.
(2)Hearing the news,we jumped with joy.
如果-ing分词的执行者不是句子的主语,-ing分词必须带自己的逻辑主语。其主语可用名词普通格或人称代词的主格来表达。我们称这一结构为分词独立结构。
(1)Weather permitting,we will go outing tomorrow.
(2)There being no bus,we had to go home on foot.
(3)I being away,he had to do the work.
(4)The whole village having been destroyed by a sudden flood,they had to stay in tents.
